About Kibira National Park

Kibira National Park covers over 40,000 acres of mountainous terrain along the Congo-Nile divide in northwestern Burundi. It is the largest protected montane rainforest in the country, characterized by steep slopes, deep valleys, and an intricate network of streams and waterfalls. The park's climate is humid and temperate, supporting an exceptional variety of flora and fauna, including endemic species such as the endangered primates — chimpanzees and colobus monkeys. The forest canopy is dense, composed mainly of hardwood species like Parinari and Aningeria trees, and the understory teems with ferns, tree ferns, and wild orchids.

Historically, Kibira has been an important natural haven for local communities, who depend on its resources sustainably and respect its cultural significance. The park was officially gazetted as a national park in the late 1980s to preserve its critical biodiversity and watershed functions.

Key visitor activities include hiking through established trails that range from easy nature walks to challenging multi-day treks, bird watching, and wildlife viewing. The park's diverse bird species, including the endangered great blue turaco and mountain ibis, attract ornithologists and nature lovers. Waterfalls such as the Rugabu Waterfall offer breathtaking scenery and natural swimming opportunities. The park is relatively remote, providing a tranquil, immersive experience for visitors who seek solitude and connection with nature. Local guides are essential for safe exploration due to the dense forest and rugged terrain. Kibira’s unique environment makes it a vital conservation area as well as a compelling destination for environmentally conscious travelers.
